The stone houses of Deià under the Tramuntana mountains

Coast · private · 5 hours

Deià & Valldemossa: the Artists’ Coast

The two villages that drew Chopin, Robert Graves and half the painters of Europe — a quieter, slower version of the west coast with time to sit, look and eat well.

Highlights

  • Valldemossa and Chopin’s cell in the Carthusian monastery
  • Deià, the village of Robert Graves, and his house
  • The cove of Cala Deià and its fishermen’s restaurant
  • Son Marroig, the Archduke’s estate on the cliffs

Between Valldemossa and Sóller the coast road hangs above the sea, and two villages on it have been attracting writers and painters for two centuries. Valldemossa has the monastery and the piano; Deià, a cone of golden stone houses above a cove, has the grave of Robert Graves and a bohemian streak it has never lost.

This is the west coast without the rush: a proper visit to the monastery, Graves’s house as he left it, lunch at the fishermen’s shack in Cala Deià or a terrace in the village, and a stop at Son Marroig, where the Archduke Ludwig Salvator built a marble temple for the view.
